The Gay Bishop and the Anglican Schism

Post by barrie » Sat Jul 26, 2008 10:59 am

Gayly bishop yankee doodle
splitting Church of Anglicum.
Cantlebirdy papist poodle,
spitting seeds of purgitum.
Dress me up in flowy robes
singy choiry song or two,
restart Christus’ brainy lobes,
let's see if he know what to do.
After letting go of branches and walking through the ape gait, we managed to grasp what hands were really for......

Barrie

Very amusing. Well constructed and full of lively wordplay. I'm a sucker for Latin words, so Anglicum/purgitum do it for me. They give the piece some strange sort of veracity, in amongst the funnies you drop into the rest of it. Have you been at the Stanley Unwin again?

As for what's to do? I'd send Gene Robinson on an African foot washing tour. Could make for good late night TV.

Nice one.

Baz. Nah, not working for me. It's funny, but not JCC funny. Topical but not tropical. You do tropes so well, too.

Barrie

I rather like this. The topical nature of the content, a subject I find amusing anyway.
As has already been said, the word play is vibrant.
The construction is very well crafted. My only point for thought is "restart" in line seven.
It is likely only my personal taste, but I thought it slightly weaker than than the rest of the wording.
I know a theasaurus will offer up revive, which does fit well here, (in what it does). It just seems to me, that if that, action were to be a little more obvious than "resume" Or even, some other vehicle for having Christ available to deal with the problem portrayed.
It would possibly levitate that action, to the standard of the rest of the poem.

Thanks for an enjoyable read.

Thanks Oscar - I'm not sure what I think about gay priests, it doesn't make any difference to me. Maybe they should start up an alternative Church - the name of it would be interesting.

Thanks Beau - I didn't think it would be to your liking - something along similar lines got the thumbs down a couple of months ago. I was disappointed, you being a music man and all that, that you failed to notice you can sing it to Beethoven's 9th symphony (4th movement). I was listening to that when I wrote it - just take away Schiller's Ode to Joy and insert The Gay Bishop.

An die Freude (Ode to Joy)

Freude, schöner Götterfunken,
Tochter aus Elysium!
Wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische, Dein Heiligtum.
Deine Zauber binden wieder,
Was die Mode streng geteilt,
Alle Menschen werden Brüder,
Wo Dein sanfter Flügel weilt.

OK, so Schiller's is better.

Thanks Dante - I tried a few synonyms before deciding on restart - I went for the middle 'st' to go with same in Christus.

Cheers all

Oh yes, the Unwinianism of this is just outstandling.

Didn't spot the Ode to Joy though. Sure you could have got Freud in there as well.

Cheers
