establishment saving skilled choose iron conceived wholesale amidst lyrebird alliterated

Make a poem using all these words.

I got them here, if you want to play with it yourself, try setting it to obscure interjections...

Conflict diamonds

Were we conceived in iron,
whelped in the war-storm,
swaddled amidst wholesale rains
of steel and fire?

Is that our role, or rather,
one of two to choose --
defending or attacking
some establishment,
some status-quo bundle
of the way things are?

Were we conceived
in a more artistic vein
human lyrebirds skilled only
in preening and posing?

Are we worth saving?
Or are the poems of our lives,
crudely rhymed and alliterated,
only fit for the fire?

Phew. An unprepossessing bunch of words you got yourself there, Ian, but I think you did a pretty good damn job with them. I'm not having a go, though - I give myself enough headaches anyway, without generating some random new ones for myself.

Did the poem feel like yours, when you finished? And did it make you surprise yourself? That's always a good thing.

Cheers

David

Hi David,

I do a lot of exercises like this on another board and the great thing is they do take you far from material you would ordinarily cover.

They do generally feel like mine, especially when other people are doing the same exercise and their poems all come out completely different.

You should have a go, it's quite liberating. OTOH, it never takes me more than 10 minutes so it may less of an investment for me compared to more thorough poets...
